How Is Telework Experienced in Academia?

An increasing number of academic institutions offer their staff the option to work from other places than conventional office, i.e., telework. Academic teaching and research are recognized as some most frequent teleworkers, this seems affect well-being, performance, recovery in different ways. This study aimed investigate academics’ experiences perceptions telework within context. For this, we interviewed 26 academics Swedish universities. Interviews were analyzed with a phenomenographic approach, which showed that was perceived natural part necessary resource for coping with, recovering from, high demands. Telework mostly self-regulated but opportunity could be determined by tasks, professional culture, management. facilitate individual’s contribute challenges workgroup. Formal regulations considered threat autonomy possibility cope The findings provide insight into working conditions during teleworking, may important maintaining sustainable environment when options.
